State Headquarters Office Damaged; No Employees Injured

HOUSTON, TX — A man was detained by police after a car drove into the Prevent Blindness Texas building on Waugh Drive in the early morning hours on Tuesday, April 16, 2019. The Houston Police Department responded at approximately 2:45 am and picked up a man in the area who is believed to have been the driver.

The office building, located at 2202 Waugh Drive, serves as both the state headquarters and Southeast Texas Region for Prevent Blindness Texas, a nonprofit organization which serves over 40,000 adults and children annually in Texas. We have also additional offices in Dallas and San Antonio but serve clients statewide. Prevent Blindness Texas provides critical vision care to Texas’s most vulnerable citizens by providing early detection and screening services, conducting eye health and vision education programs to providers, parents, children and the public, providing navigation services and resources for follow-up care, including prescription glasses and other eye care treatments.

The building, which sustained considerable damage, was not occupied at the time of the accident.  Damage estimates remain unknown. We continue to stay mission-focused and serve our community.

Heather Shirk Patrick, President and CEO of Prevent Blindness Texas, said, “It’s an unfortunate situation, but we are thankful no employees or clients were in the building.  Prevent Blindness Texas is focused on minimizing the impact of this incident as it relates to providing service to our clients. We appreciate the outpouring of support from our community partners and the general public.”
