The mission of Prevent Blindness Texas is to prevent blindness and preserve sight.
At Prevent Blindness Texas, our vision is vision - a vision that all children are afforded the benefits of sight as they grow and learn; a vision that all adults are educated about proper eye healthcare and have access to that same care; a vision that necessary attention is provided to issues surrounding the aging eye; and a vision that no one endlessly loses their sight due to unsafe practices.
Who We Are
Established in 1956 and incorporated in 1965, Prevent Blindness Texas is the state's leading voluntary eye health and safety organization dedicated to preventing blindness and preserving sight. As such, we focus on improving the state's vision and eye health by enhancing community capacity through our core competencies of early detection, patient support, systems enhancement, public policy, public awareness and health education. Half of all blindness can be prevented, yet this can only occur through these essential interventions.
Focused on providing a continuum of vision care, Prevent Blindness Texas touches the lives of thousands of Texans through our sight-saving programs and services through our network of volunteers and offices located in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.
What We Do
We promote early detection and patient support. Early detection of vision problems is a key to the prevention of vision loss and blindness. While we encourage all individuals to seek regular professional eye care, we recognize that this alone is not enough. Interventions such as vision screenings and risk assessments are an essential element of a strong public health approach to vision and eye health care. We facilitate screening programs by establishing evidence-based standards and delivering trainings to ensure that screenings are properly administered. Last year, Prevent Blindness Texas screened the eyes of 36,570 children and 6,293 adults.
We educate. Through our various health education initiatives, Prevent Blindness Texas educates specific populations about vision, eye health and safety. Among some of the education and awareness programs currently available include our "Diabetic Eye Disease Educator Program", which teaches outreach personnel and allied health personnels about issues related to diabetes and the eye; the "Healthy Eyes Educational Series", which uses a series of education modules to educate about various age-related eye conditions; "Eye2Eye", a Web-based safety education and training program developed to help safety directors in industrial workplace settings build a network of "safety ambassadors"; the "Star Pupils School Curriculum", which provides teachers with resources to educate their students about eye health and safety. Last year, Prevent Blindness Texas provided eye health information to more than 287,913 Texans.
We provide direct access to vision care. Through national partnerships, including VSP Vision Care's "Sight for Students" and "Mobile Eyes" charity programs, and Luxottica's "Healthy Eyes Eyeglass Program", Prevent Blindness Texas assisted 327 children with vouchers for free eye exams and eyeglasses, as well as provided 2,402 free eye exams and 5,664 eyeglasses to qualifying adults.
We train and certify adult and children's vision screeners through the only national program of its kind, providing more than 322 volunteers with the skills they need to help people in their communities.
We advocate. At Prevent Blindness Texas, our organizational history is deeply rooted in the culture of advocating for public policy that advances vision and eye health of all Americans. We work with government officials at the state, local and national levels - building grassroots advocacy movements that will improve our nation's public health policies and access to care.
